Three Blacksmiths

My wife and I made reservations to go to Three Blacksmiths for my birthday. We had to book our reservation six months in advance and it was definitely worth the wait. Three Blacksmiths was one of the most unique and best dining experiences we have had to date.

This quaint restaurant fronts on Main Street in the quiet Town of Sperryville, Virginia, at foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. When you enter the restaurant you are greeted by the owner's John and Diane MacPherson where you are directed to your reserved table. There are only 7 tables and each is a chef's table with full view of the kitchen and plating of the courses. The dining area is rustic and comfortable with large stained wooden beams, ornate chandeliers and elegantly set tables.


Dinner is a 5 course weekly Pre Fixe menu with most of the ingredients coming from local farms in Rappahannock County. They also serve little tasters in between some the courses which are not on the menu. The menu might be Pre Fixe, but they are very accommodating for people with food allergies/sensitivities, such as gluten free. The menu is seasonal and is carefully thought out based on the availability of the ingredients.


As each course is brought to you by one of the chef's it is described to you. They also let you know which farm it was locally sourced from. Although you may never taste this exact menu, you could have a salad of day lillies and local beets or the cool and refreshing chilled Courgette soup. Followed by the perfectly cooked cheese and herb tortellini or the melt in your mouth Ember butter lamb loin. Only to finish off with a sweet and savory berry cobbler and ginger shortcake with Thai basil gelato. And these are just the things that are seen on the menu, not the surprise tasters in between. While each portion may not be what you are used to, all together the menu will leave you satisfied.


As of this article they are booked into February but, they do have random reservations open up. Dinner is only served Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and reservations can only be made online. Our dinner was for a special occasion but, we plan on visiting again in the spring and our anniversary if we can get in.
