As you know I am trying to try as many BBQ places as I can this summer. I started two weeks ago in Crozet at Smoked Kitchen and Tap.
Smoked started out in downtown Charlottesville as a trailer on the downtown mall by Justin Van der Linde. I remember stopping there a couple times when I was in Charlottesville for work and there would be a line down the block to get his food. With help from Kelley Tripp(owner Fitzroy Downtown) they opened Smoked Kitchen and Tap in downtown Crozet in January of 2017. Located in the new Piedmont Place building they have created a wonderfully modern and relaxing atmosphere, with plenty of inside and outside seating.
Obviously I was there for the food. All the BBQ is prepared in the traditional sense. By that I mean on four huge smokers at the back the property cooking away.
All the meat: brisket, chicken, pork, turkey and sausage are smoked using Hickory which provides a wonderful aroma and depth of flavor. I decided to try a little bit of everything. I started my meal though with the BLT deviled eggs, which have bacon, roasted tomato and chives. Absolutely amazing.
For my meal I ordered the ribs, pulled pork, brisket, cheddar and jalapeno sausage, turkey and two sides; mac and cheese and cheesy bacon potatoes, which had a kind of hash brown approach.
My favorite parts of the meal were the ribs, the cheddar jalapeno sausage and the mac and cheese(bonus points for using traditional elbow macaroni). Not that I didn't like everything, those just happen to be my favorite. I would suggest that if you are going to try everything like I did, bring a friend or two. I did and we were both stuffed by the end of the meal. If BBQ isn't your thing, Smoked has plenty of other things on their menu. They have burgers, sandwiches, fried chicken and lots of other stuff. It's definitely family friendly. They also have a couple local beers on tap and a full bar with some signature drinks. So if you find yourself in Crozet and in need of BBQ, be sure to stop in and grab a bite, you won't be disappointed.
Be sure to follow on:
Next up I traveled to Sperryville where I met up with Divine Swine 29 at Pen Druid Brewing. Great BBQ and people, but you'll find more out about that later this weekend. Until then be sure to Drink Up and Eat Well!
