I have been traveling around the past couple weeks( with a Mexican vacation thrown in there too!) trying to find the best BBQ in Virginia. I have decided I am going to start doing multiple locations in one post to kind of sum up my travels, because it would get to tedious to do one for each place and honestly I just don't have that kind of time. So therefore here we go.
If you know anything about Virginia BBQ you know BBQ Exchange. This restaurant in the small town of Gordonsville in Orange County has become a favorite stop for many people including Food Networks Man, Fire, Food. Owner/Pitmaster Craig Hartman has created a location that cannot be passed up. From pork to brisket, to tofu(yes tofu) they have it all. There is also a special menu where you can get two special sandwiches called Heaven and Hell, but you can go check them out for yourself.
Ace Biscuit and BBQ is a little bit off the beaten path of the main routes of downtown Charlottesville. The restaurant itself is a small brick building that has very limited seating. I love this atmosphere. Ace serves all your BBQ favorites, but also serves breakfast. Have you ever had BBQ for breakfast? It's awesome. Think of a brisket egg and cheese biscuit. Yeah. I would definitely make plans to go multiple times(breakfast, lunch and dinner?) as their menu is huge and has a ton of different items to try.
I recently discovered Ferguson's Finest through Instagram. Ferguson's is a BBQ and Catering Company owned by veteran Mike Ferguson. Mike has trained at the culinary school Lacademie De Cuisine and was chef in DC before answering the call to the pits. When he is not catering he is set up at The Craft of Brewing in Ashburn. I'm glad I had a chance to meet up him as he had large beef ribs. This is honestly the first time I have had the dinosaur bone style rib and I am hooked. Mike also supplied me with some wonderfully tender brisket and burnt ends. I look forward to meeting up with him again soon. Be sure to give him a follow and check out his BBQ.
5 Pigs BBQ and Catering is another place I just happen to find in my travels. We were traveling to Vanish Brewing in Lucketts and spotted this trailer and decided to stop on our way back through. I'm glad we did. 5 Pigs is owned by Harry Graham and was started back in 2009. He has trained all over the US to bring the different styles of BBQ to the East coast. Harry also trained along side of the Pitmasters themselves Myron Mixon and Rod Grey. Harry is a firm believer in good BBQ doesn't need sauce.( I agree with him also) That's why he uses four different wood to give his BBQ an amazing flavor. He starts with oak and hickory, then finishes with cherry and apple woods. You can taste the passion in his food. He is also only the second place I have found that serves pork belly! You can either get platters with sides or meat by the pound. You will find his trailer on Route 15 in Lucketts in the parking lot of LoudounBerry Farm & Garden which will be getting an ice cream barn and beer garden next season.
I hope you guys are enjoying my posts and pictures of BBQ. I'm not even close to being done! There are so many more places to visit. I just hope my waistband holds up. If you know of any place that you want me to try feel free to drop me a line. Until next time Drink Up and Eat Well!
