Virginia BBQ - Weekly Wrap Up

Burnt Ends Food Truck-Culpeper

Burnt Ends BBQ is a "food truck" that is based here in Culpeper. You can find them on most Sunday's in the Lowe's parking lot in Culpeper. You can also find them at different breweries and events from Prince William County to Madison County. Burnt Ends originated in Austin, Texas and moved to Virginia in 2010 to introduce the area to real Texas BBQ. I have known owner Ronnie Riojas and his wife for a little over 3 years now and have been a customer since they have been in Culpeper. Burnt Ends does brisket, pulled pork and chicken along with traditional BBQ sides. I normally order their Texas brisket. I can't get enough of it. Recently though they put beef ribs on the menu, something that is hard to find at most BBQ places and they were pretty good. They also make their own sauces. I personally don't think their BBQ needs sauce, but I'm not a big fan of sauces on BBQ. If you want to try Burnt Ends be sure to follow them on social media to see where they will be dishing out good ole fashion Texas BBQ.

Billikens Smokehouse-Fredericksburg

Billikens Smokehouse in Fredericksburg is the second location for this Virginia BBQ restaurant(other is in Mineral). It is located in the historical Chimney's house on Caroline Street. The Smokehouse is a full service restaurant with a decent sized menu and a full bar for all of your dining needs. Billikens has a 1000 gallon smoker that produces some amazingly delicious BBQ. We ordered the BBQ brunch nachos and the brisket mac and cheese. The brisket was nice and tender as you would expect and the cheese sauce had great taste of smoked gouda and pimento cheese, not something you normally get in your typical mac and cheese. I loved the pickled onions and jalapenos along with the pulled pork on the nachos. The over easy egg was an extra special gift. Billikens has a nice dining room, large outside seating and what I will call an activity yard. The restaurant is also going to be getting some cool new additions by having a speak easy on the second floor with a cigar lounge, private bar and some other interesting amenities. Billikens offer a nice brunch menu on the weekends, if you are looking for something different. Billikens a family friendly restaurant with something for everyone. Based on the BBQ here I will be checking out their Mineral location soon.

Bear Bones BBQ and Catering-Stafford/Fredericksburg

Bear Bones BBQ is a mobile catering company based out of Stafford. Originally from Alabama and a Marine Veteran, Mark Green found his calling in front of a 1000 gallon smoker. Mark and his wife recently started up Bear Bones and they are quickly making a name for themselves in the Fredericksburg BBQ scene. Right now you can find them hanging out at Maltese Brewing on the weekends, that is where I met up with them. He offers brisket, pullled pork, ribs, bacon wrapped jalapenos, chicken and so much more. I ordered a brisket stuffed smoked baked potato(yes he smokes his potatoes....awesome) with cheddar cheese and his own BBQ sauce. I'm pretty sure this could feed a small family. It was huge and amazing. I look forward to visiting them again soon to try the whole sampler platter. Be sure to check out their social media to see where they are serving up their delicious BBQ.

Hank's Grille & Bar-McGaheysville

Hank's Grill & Bar is just west of the Massanutten resort on Route 33 in McGaheysville. It's a great place to stop for a belly full of food after hitting the slopes or driving on Skyline Drive or even just passing through for lunch(which was what I was doing). Hank's serves traditional BBQ, brisket, ribs, pulled pork and they are all smoked on a large smoker down in the basement of the building. They also make their own pickles which is a huge bonus. I love house made pickles. I ordered the brisket and pulled pork plate with a side of mac and cheese and the house made pickles. The brisket didn't need any sauce, but they have four house made sauces for you to use and purchase if you would like to take some home. I really appreciated the mac and cheese, it was elbow macaroni with just delightful stringy cheese. This is my favorite kind of mac and cheese. The pulled pork was nice and tender and flavorful, but I used it as a guinea pig to try all four of the BBQ sauces. I would say their Original sauce and the Whiskey BBQ were my two top choices. If you aren't interested in BBQ they have burgers, sandwiches, fried catfish and other southern cuisine. Hank's also offers full service catering for any of your office or party needs.

Next week I will have two new locations and an update on Divine Swine's new permanent location in Warrenton. Coming up August 19th Maltese Brewing is holding a small BBQ fest. Be sure to follow them on Facebook for more details and updates. Also on September 30th the Town of Culpeper is holding their first ever Hop and Hog Block Party. I will have more details on that as it gets closer. As always I suggest you check out the places I talk about and support local businesses. Until next week Drink Up and Eat Well.
